Brevard, N.C. - Chelsi Mallory of the Softball team and Kim Koivu of the Men’s Golf team have been named the Sports Spot Student-Athletes of the Month for the month of March, as recognized on WSQL 1240 AM on Wednesday afternoon. The award is presented by Sports Spot, in conjunction with the Brevard College Athletic Department.
Mallory was voted the Female Student-Athlete of the Month by the BC Head Coaching staff over fellow nominees Alice Klochkova of the Women’s Golf team and Michelle Prata of the Women’s Tennis team.
Mallory wins the award after hitting .348 in the month of March, connecting on 24 hits, four home runs and three doubles, while driving in 10 runs and scoring 13 times to lead the BC Softball team. During the month, she sported a season-high eight game hitting streak with multiple hits in five games in the streak, including a season-high three hits coming against St. Andrews on March 5th. Her best game of the month was against St. Andrews, where the senior second baseman from Mechanicsville, Va. went 3-for-4 from the plate with a home run, scoring twice, while driving in three runs in the Tornados victory. She recorded her best doubleheader of the month on March 28th, going 3-for-6 against Newberry College and added a home run as the Tornados recorded the conference sweep over the Wolves.
Koivu was voted the Men’s Student-Athlete of the Month by the BC Head Coaching Staff over fellow nominees Champ Stuart of the Baseball team and Beau Wills of the Men’s Tennis team.
Koivu continues a dominating freshman campaign with the Tornados as the Helsinki, Finland native earned medalist honors at his second tournament in the 2011-2012 season and led the Brevard College golf team to the team tournament victory at the Cherokee Valley Invitational. During the month, Koivu established new Brevard College records, recording the lowest single round under par and the best two round score in BC men’s golf history. Koivu recorded a 66, 6-under par in the first round of the Cherokee Invitational, and finished the second day with a score of 70, 2-under to set a BC tournament record, and the Cherokee Invitational record with a score of 136, 8-under par for the tournament. For the month, he averaged a stroke total of 72.0, even par in the three tournaments he played.
These two athletes will be presented with action shots recognizing their award, which will be displayed in the lobby of Boshamer Gymnasium for the entire school year. A total of eight female and male Sports Spot Athletes of the Month will be selected in the 2010-2011 academic year. The award is selected from qualified candidates each month by the athletic department staff.
