Brevard, N.C. - The Wingate University men's soccer team used a quintet of first-half goals to waltz past Brevard College, 6-0, Saturday afternoon in South Atlantic Conference action. The Bulldogs improve to 7-5-1 (1-3 SAC) with the victory, while the Tornados fall to 3-10-1, 0-6 in conference games.
Wingate opened their scoring account in the 9th minute, when All-SAC forward Junior Nyemb (Douala, Cameroon) capitalized on a mistake by Brevard goalkeeper Jerry Hatsady (Orlando, Fla.). The freshman keeper came out of the box in an attempt to corral a loose ball but came up empty, allowing Nyemb to collect the ball and score on an open goal, making the score 1-0.
Nyemb assisted on Luke Mulholland's goal in the 11th minute. After Nyemb's pass led Mulholland to a gap in the Tornado backline, the Preston, England native blazed a shot past Hatsady to double the score at 2-0.
Tom Mills (Preston, England) made a deposit into Wingate's scoring balance on a breakaway goal in the 30th minute. The unassisted strike pushed the Wingate advantage to a near-insurmountable 3-0.
Things got worse for Brevard in the 40th minute. Fabricio Barancoski (Sao Paulo, Brazil) took possession of a loose ball in front of the goal and blasted a shot past Hatsady to make the score 4-0.
The Bulldogs had one more first-half check to cash, and it was up to Michael Lawrence (Charlotte, N.C.) to do the honors with help from Jamie McKenna (Thornton, England). McKenna took off for a long run down the left side of the field in the 44th minute, bringing Hatsady off of his line. With the goal open, McKenna slipped a nifty pass around Hatsady and to the foot of Lawrence, who calmly finished an easy chance to run the halftime tally to 5-0.
Wingate decelerated in the second half and scored only once. Rory Green (Sleaford, England) collected the ball after Adam Cunningham's (Gastonia, N.C.) blast was saved by Hatsady. With the Brevard keeper out of the pipes, Green was able to finish, running the score to its final 6-0 resting place.
Hatsady allowed six goals but did make seven saves. Brevard's main offensive threats were Kyle Hamilton (Peterhead, Scotland) and Douglas Neill (Inellan, Scotland) were Brevard's main offensive threats, notching three and two shots on goal, respectively. Wingate keepers Joey Calandra (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) and Jeremy Webb (Gastonia, N.C.) combined for four saves and a shutout.
Brevard's next match comes Wednesday ay 7 p.m. against Division II foe Winthrop. Wingate's next foray onto the pitch is also Wednesday, at 4 p.m., against Chowan.
