Ogden, Utah - The Brevard College Cycling team finished up their spring road season at the 2012 Collegiate Road Cycling National Championship as Jimmy Schurman, Lewis Gaffney, Brandon Milet and Caleb Welborn took on the field for the Tornados in the cycling season finale.
The Tornados quartet recorded 56 points in the Criterium and 15 points in the Road Race as to pace Brevard to an 18th place finish, among the 45 colleges and universities who sent riders to compete in the Division II Championships.
Individually, Welborn led all Brevard riders on the weekend, finishing 18th overall in the omnium standings. Gaffney was also ranked, finishing 30th overall in the Division II individual standings.
Schurman led the Tornados in Saturday’s Criterium event, finishing ninth overall with 172.91 points in the event. Welborn was also in the top 20, finishing 19th among the riders with 220.31 points. Gaffney battled to finish 43rd overall with 334.07 points, while Milet rounded out the group with 476.27 points to finish 73rd.
Sunday brought the final event of the weekend as the riders took on the road race course and Welborn led the BC cyclists on the day, finishing 24th overall after crossing the line with a time of 3:23:58. Gaffney also completed the course for the Tornados, finishing 40th overall with a time of 3:26:55 to end the weekend. Milet and Schurman were unable to finish the course.
