Football's Trey Wilborn has been named Tornado Athlete of the Week for the seventh week of the 2008-09 athletic season, college's sports information department announced today. Wilborn collected 27 of the 63 votes cast by visitors of BCTornados.com, or 42.9%.
Wilborn (Acworth, Ga.) transitioned from rover on the defensive side of the ball to quarterback in preparation for the team's match-up with Tusculum, and the switch paid off with the team's best offensive performance of the season to date. The sophomore carried the ball 14 times for 116 yards and a touchdown and completed a 4th quarter pass to Desmond Wilson for another touchdown. Wilborn also returned two kicks for 77 yards, including a 48-yarder on Brevard's first touch of the game. The Tornado offense posted a season-best 42 points, 23 first downs, 394 total offensive yards, and 356 rushing yards with Wilborn at the helm, despite falling 55-42 to the Pioneers.
Wilborn's win marks the third consecutive week a football player has captured the honor. Linebacker Stanley Jones was the TAW in Weeks 5 and 6.
The Tornado Athlete of the Week is determined by a fan poll on the frontpage of BCTornados.com. Candidates for the Tornado Athlete of the Week award are announced and voting opens every Saturday night at 10 p.m. Voting closes on Tuesday morning at 10 a.m.
