Brevard, N.C. – The Brevard College women’s volleyball team hosted Newberry College on Wednesday night, falling in three straight sets, 25-21, 25-12, and 25-13 in Boshamer Gymnasium on the campus of Brevard College.
The loss drops Brevard to 9-11 overall and 1-8 in the SAC, while Newberry improves to 13-7 and 6-3 in the conference.
In set one the Tornados stormed out of the gates, jumping out to an early 9-5 lead on a Newberry attack error. However, Newberry bounced back to go on a 6-0 run to take an 11-9 lead on a kill from Priscila Sales.
After a kill by sophomore Cori Emory stopped the Newberry run, the two teams traded points back-and-forth with Newberry holding off the Tornados and securing on to a two point lead. Newberry pulled away at the close of the match, as kill by Sales got Newberry going, as they outscored the Tornados 6-4 down the stretch to pick up the 25-21 win and an early 1-0 lead.
In set two, the Tornados had an early 2-1 lead on a kill by freshman Jordei Osby, but it did not stand up as Newberry battled back to take a demanding 17-8 lead and force Coach Skeffington to call a timeout.
Out of the timeout Newberry’s offensive surge continued, as they outscored the Tornados 8-4 down the stretch to score the 25-12 win and take a 2-0 advantage.
In set three, back-to-back kills by newcomer Chelsey Trojan and sophomore Kirstan Carlson gave the Tornados an early 2-0 advantage. Newberry responded with a 14-7 run, capped off by a Brianna Blakely service ace to go ahead 14-9.
The Tornados, who struggled offensively throughout the match, fought hard but could not quite get back into the match as Newberry pulled away down the stretch to come away with the 25-13 set win and the 3-0 match victory.
Junior middle hitter Brooke Seaman led the way for BC with seven kills and three total blocks. Freshmen Chelsea Larson and Osby each recorded four kills and one block assist apiece for the three set match, while Larsen had a seven digs as well. Senior setter Jami Perry had 15 set assists, while sophomore libero Rebecca Schoonover had a nine digs on the night.
For Newberry, Sales had a match-high 17 kills and 10 digs. Setter Brianna Blakely had a match-high 32 assists, while Lorena Maia posted nine kills and three service aces.
The Tornados will hit the road for their next match, as BC will travel 50 miles northwest to Mars Hill, N.C. to take on the Lions of Mars Hill College on Friday, October 17 at 7 p.m. Newberry College will return to action on Saturday, October 18 when they will travel to Tigerville, S.C. to take on North Greenville University at 1 p.m.
