Wingate, N.C. - Brevard senior Alycia Andrade captured the women's title at the Wingate Pre-Conference Invitational Thursday afternoon on the campus of Wingate University. Andrade (Somerset, Mass.) finished the 5K course in a time of 20:07, 14 seconds ahead of Francis Marion's Kelly May (Bowling Green, Ohio). The individual victory is the first of the season for Andrade.
Wingate's Gold squad won the team portion of the event, followed in order by Catawba, Wingate's Blue team, Francis Marion, North Greenville and Johnson C. Smith.
The Tornado women's squad did not officially place after failing to meet the minimum of five runners, but the two Tornados that accompanied Andrade to Wingate turned in strong performances of their own. Brittany Radenbaugh (Columbia, S.C.) finished 14th with a time of 23:00, and Meghan Grimes (Ft. Pierce, Fla.) crossed the finish line 29th with a time of 25:12.
The Tornado men's squad finished fifth overall. The host school's White squad took the team title, with Francis Marion finishing second, Wingate Gold finishing third, and North Greenville fourth.
Brevard was led by Damon Martin (Indian Trail, N.C.), who finished 20th with a 5K time of 18:40, 2:50 behind individual winner Jayce Watson (Millersport, Ohio) of Wingate. Jonathon Lavelle (Tunnel Hill, Ga.) checked in 23rd with a time of 18:57, followed by 29th-place Tiffen Tapia (Gainesville, Fla.), with a time of 19:39. Zach Hazen (Inman, S.C.) finished 30th after running the course in 19:46, and Michael de Kozlowski (Columbia, S.C.) placed 32nd in a time of 20:12. Ryan Forsyth (Chesapeake, Va.) rounded out the Tornado side with a 35th-place finish, crossing the line six seconds shy of 21 minutes even.
The Tornados continue their season October 25th at the SAC Championships.
