Brevard, N.C. - Brevard College dominated Emmanuel College everywhere but the scoreboard Saturday afternoon, outshooting the Lady Lions 38-15 but settling for a 3-3 tie in women's soccer action. The Tornados move to 5-10-1 (0-6 SAC), while Emmanuel moves to 3-9-2.
Emmanuel quickly shook off the rust from their three-hour bus ride from Franklin Springs, Ga. and scored just three minutes into the match. Alexis Schultz (Dakar, Senegal) set up Dilyn MacLean (Blue Ridge, Ga.) with a perfect lead pass, which MacLean banged home to give the Lady Lions a 1-0 lead.
The Tornados responded with a pair of goals before the halftime break. Caitlin Hubbard (Clayton, N.C.) tied the game in the 8th minute off a perfect through ball from Courtney Sofferin (Thomasville, Ga.), blasting a shot from the right side of the box to tie the match at one. Eleven minutes later, Rachael Laughlin (Chesapeake, Va.) gave Brevard the lead. A short corner kick was collected by Carrilea Potter, who swung a ball into the box which was slammed home by Laughlin, making the score 2-1 Brevard.
The two teams would stay off the scoreboard until the 67th minute, when MacLean struck again. Schultz again set the forward up with a perfect touch pass and McLean finished, tying the match at two.
Brevard responded immediately, taking the restart quickly down the field and scoring a 67th-minute tally of their own, an unassisted strike from Bailey Varley (Concord, N.C.) to give the Tornados a 3-2 advantage.
But the MacLean/Schultz duo linked up again the 78th. Another perfect pass from Schultz beat the Tornado defense and set up MacLean at point blank range, where she completed her hat trick and tied the game at three. Neither team was able to score again in regulation or overtime, and the game ended in a draw.
The result was disappointing for the Tornados considering how lopsided possession was in their favor. Brevard launched 38 shots to Emmanuel's 15. But just 14 of those Brevard shots were on target, and Lady Lion keeper Ashley Crowley (Suwanee, Ga.) made 11 saves. Brevard's Sydney Douglas (Houston, Ga.) made seven saves as Emmanuel put ten shot on goal.
The Tornados look to get back in the win column Friday when they host Converse College at 1 p.m. Emmanuel will play at Breneau College Tuesday at 7 p.m.
