Brevard, N.C.- The Brevard College Tornados volleyball team picked up wins over Converse College and Johnson C. Smith University in the annual Brevard College Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
The Tornados triumphed 3-1 over the Converse College Valkyries in the tournament’s opening match, and handled the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith in straight sets in the tournament finale.
Converse jumped out to a hot start against the Tornados in the first set, taking an early 8-3 lead. BC took three of the next four points to pull within two points of the Valkyries.
The set went back and forth until Converse took control late, eventually taking the set 25-17.
After a see-saw battle for most the second set it was BC who took control late, going on a 7-4 run to close the set for a 25-19 win.
Brevard dominated the third set, jumping out to an early 8-1 lead. The Tornados finished the set on an 11-3 run for a 25-10 set win.
BC started hot again in the fourth and final set with an 8-1 lead. The Valkyries couldn’t recover, and BC held on to win 25-21.
Megan Clark delivered a match-high 22 kills at an astounding .571 hitting percentage. Fatima Gharachorloo chipped in 16 kills, and the Tornados hit .370 as a team against Converse.
The Tornados then watched as Limestone College dropped JCSU in straight sets, and then downed Converse 3-1 before taking the court again.
JCSU proved no match for the Tornados, as they swept the Golden Bulls in straight sets 25-7, 25-12, 25-11.
Joy Oswalt led the Tornados with nine kills at a .538 hitting percentage, and BC posted a .323 team hitting percentage in the win over JCSU.
The Tornados return to SAC action as they hit the road to take on the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears at on Tuesday, October 23rd at 7 p.m.
