Brevard, N.C.- Brevard College’s Joel Jalanne scored the game-winning goal in the 85th minute to lift the Tornados to a 2-1 victory over the Newberry College Wolves on Tuesday afternoon.
Jalanne settled the rebound of a Marcelo Betcer free kick that deflected off Newberry keeper Patrick Sweatt, punching it into the lower right corner of the net at 84:37.
Efren D. Escobar wasted little time putting the Tornados on the scoreboard, finding the back of the net only 24 seconds into the game. Escobar dribbled down the left side of the pitch, sending the ball off the far post and in the net for a 1-0 lead.
Tornados senior keeper Jack Shaw was instrumental in Brevard’s second conference victory of the season, recording nine saves to tie a career-high. Shaw turned away Newberry’s Kyle Maitland at close range with a save at 75:10 to keep the game tied at 1-1, and later recorded a similar save at 84:46 to preserve the Tornados 2-1 lead.
Newberry knotted the game at 1-1 on a Lucas Ferreira penalty kick in the 26th minute of the first half. A BC foul in the box led to the penalty kick for Newberry, which Ferreira sent into the lower right corner of the net.
With the win over Newberry, the Tornados remain eligible for a trip to the South Atlantic Conference Tournament that begins October 30th in Rock Hill, S.C.
The Tornados head to Catawba College on Saturday, October 27th for their last regular season contest of the 2012 campaign. Game time for the match with the Indians is set for 7:30 p.m.
