Macon, Ga.- The Brevard College women’s basketball team was edged 57-50 by the Mercer University Bears in an exhibition game Friday night at Hawkins Arena.
A Tuccoa Brackett three-point play at 9:04 in the second half put the Tornados within four points of Mercer, but the Bears were able to hold off BC for a win in their regular season opener.
Micheala Watkins led all scorers with 19 points for the Tornados, while dishing out four assists and grabbing five rebounds.
Brevard surged out to a 13-3 lead after a pair of free throws from Candice Fritz with 15:00 remaining in the opening half. Fritz finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds to earn a double-double.
Mercer used an 11-2 run to pull within a point of BC at 15-14, and the two teams played pretty close to even for the rest of the first half. Mercer’s Jessica Prieto netted a three-pointer with 1:56 remaining in the half to give the Bears a 23-21 lead going into the break.
Brevard opens their regular season on the road against Pfeiffer University on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
