Brevard, N.C.- The Brevard College Tornados upended the Virginia State Trojans 74-63 in their home opener on Tuesday night in Boshamer Gymnasium.
Micheala Watkins paced the Tornados with 24 points, and filled the box score with eight steals, six assists, and four rebounds. Watkins anchored a BC defense that forced 23 Trojan turnovers, which the Tornados converted into 27 points.
Brevard and Virginia State exchanged leads early in the opening period, but a Tuccoa Brackett layup broke an 11-11 tie at 13:33 and put BC up for the rest of the half. Brevard pushed their lead out to 10 at one point in the half, and ended up with a seven point advantage at halftime.
Virginia State tied the game at 32 less than two minutes into the second half on a Lamesha Deal three-point play.
Tempestt Mack, however, responded with a three-pointer on BC’s next possession to give the Tornados a lead they didn’t relinquish for the rest of game.
BC freshman Katie Williams scored a career-high 17 points, and led Brevard on the glass with six rebounds. Mack was the other Tornado in double figures, dropping in 11 points of 4-of-6 shooting from the field.
Four Trojans scored in double figures for Virginia State, who were paced by Brianna Holt’s 15 points. Deal recorded a double-double for the Trojans, posting 13 points and 11 rebounds.
The Tornados open South Atlantic Conference action on November 28th as they as they visit the Carson-Newman Eagles in Holt Fieldhouse at 6 p.m.
