Brevard, N.C.- The Brevard College Tornados downed the Mars Hill College Lions 79-74 in their South Atlantic Conference home opener in Boshamer Gymnasium on Saturday evening.
BC took a 38-36 advantage on a Micheala Watkins layup with 2:08 remaining in the first half, and led for the duration of the contest.
The Tornados led by as many as 14 in the second half before an 11-2 run by the Lions cut the BC lead to two points with 4:45 remaining.
Alyssa Cutshaw responded with a three to push the BC lead out to five at 73-68. While Mars Hill didn’t go quietly, the Tornados were able to hold on for win.
Watkins tied her career high with 10 steals to go along with 15 points for the double-double. Watkins also recorded 10 steals against St. Andrews on November 20, 2010.
The BC defense forced the Lions into 22 turnovers in the game, which the Tornados converted into 12 points.
The two teams went back and forth in the first half, but the Tornados were able to separate themselves to take a 43-38 lead into the break.
Tuccoa Brackett scored a game-high 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the floor, providing a scoring spark off the bench for BC. Brackett was also active on the defensive end for the Tornados, blocking five shots and recording a steal.
Brevard is on the road as they visit the Young Harris Mountain Lions at the YHC Basketball Arena on Sunday, December 2nd at p.m.
