Brevard, N.C. – Brittany Webster of the women’s soccer team and Junior Montano of the men’s soccer team have been named the Sports Spot Student-Athletes of the Month for September. The award is presented by Sports Spot, in conjunction with the Brevard College Athletic Department.
Webster was voted the Female Student-Athlete of the Month by the BC Head Coaching staff over fellow nominees Kortney Conner of volleyball and Angela Canale of cross country.
Webster receives the award for the second time in her career after a month in which she recorded 70 saves. Webster tied her career-high in saves with 16 against USC Aiken on September 8th before breaking the BC saves record with 19 against Young Harris on September 11th. Webster surpassed Sydney Douglas, whose 17 saves against Montavello on September 6, 2009 was the standing record for saves in a game.
Montano was voted the Men’s Student-Athlete of the Month by the BC Head Coaching staff over fellow nominees Patrick Helmick of cross country and Aaron Reese of football.
Montano is a first-time winner of the Athlete of the Month honors after scoring the game-winning goal in the 99th minute of overtime against Tusculum College on September 11th. The goal lifted BC to a 1-0 victory, and a 1-0 start in SAC play. The junior also scored a goal against USC Aiken on September 8th to give BC a 1-1 tie. Montano started all nine games at forward for the Tornados in September.
These two athletes will be presented with action shots recognizing their award, which will be displayed in the lobby of Boshamer Gymnasium for the entire school year. A total of eight female and male Sports Spot Athletes of the Month will be selected in the 2012-2013 academic year. The award is selected from qualified candidates each month by the athletic department staff.
