Brevard, N.C. – A
three-pointer from Dominique Pickett with just over a second left in regulation
sent the Tornados into overtime, but Erskine College eventually edged BC 89-86 in
Boshamer Gymnasium on Tuesday night.
The Flying Fleet outscored Brevard 14-11 in the five-minute
overtime period after the Pickett three tied the game at 75-75. Pickett finished
with 17 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
Pickett scored four straight points to open the extra
period, and Brevard was in the driver’s seat until a Corey Sorrell layup at
1:00 gave the Flying Fleet their first lead in overtime.
Freshman Manzey Miller answered with a three-point play on
BC’s following possession, but Sorrell scored five unanswered point to end the
game and give Erskine the three-point victory. Sorrell finished with 25 points
and seven rebounds.
Miller led a balanced offensive attack for BC, tallying 25
points and five assists. Overall, the Tornados had five players finish in
double figures. Miles Leathers posted a double-double with 12 points and 10
The Tornados trailed by as many as 13 points early in the
second half before tying the game on a Miller three with nine minutes remaining
in regulation, but BC turnovers proved too costly down the stretch. The Tornados turned the ball over 22 times on
the night, which the Flying Fleet converted into 31 points.
The Tornados return to South Atlantic Conference play as they visit the Catawba College Indians on January 9th. Tipoff from Goodman Gym is set for 8 p.m.
