Brevard, N.C.- The Brevard College women's basketball team earned a 73-53 victory over Catawba College in Boshamer Gymnasium on Wednesday night, thanks to a career-high 29 points from Micheala Watkins.
The Indians pulled to within six points on a Chloe Bully three-pointer with 13:44 left in the second half, but the Tornados answered with nine straight points to push their lead to 49-34.
The Tornados held a double-digit lead for the rest of the contest, and led by as many as 22. Brevard shot a season-high 52% (26-of-50) from the field while holding the Indians to a 38.9 (21-of-54) shooting percentage.
Watkins went 10-for-16 from the field and 8-of-10 from the line to lead the Tornados offensively, also tallying six steals on the defensive end.
Leading 6-5 in the early minutes, the Tornados used a 23-7 run to jump out to a comfortable 29-12 lead on a Watkins trey with 8:25 left in the opening period.
Catawba was able to get back in the game with 12 unanswered points late in the half, capped by seven straight points from Catawba's Elizabeth Meritt. A Watkins jumper followed by a Shelby Wofle layup put BC ahead 33-24 lead at the break.
Wolfe and Tuccoa Brackett also finished with double figures for the Tornados, with the freshmen combining for 26 points and nine rebounds.
The Tornados look to make it two in a row in conference play as they visit Stanford Arena to take on the Mars Hill College Lions on Saturday at 2 p.m. BC topped Mars Hill 79-74 in their meeting in Boshamer Gymnasium on December 1st.
