Hickory, N.C- The Brevard College baseball team beat the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears 5-3 in their South Atlantic Conference opener at Bears Field on Friday night.
BC starter Kevin Hamilton (W, 2-0) earned the win, allowing two earned runs over six innings while Kody Spencer drove in three runs to lead the Tornados offensively.
Hamilton kept the Bears off the board until the 4th inning, allowing the Tornados to take an early 3-0 lead. Bennett Hixson doubled to start the top of the 2nd, and scored on an Eric Renegar sacrifice fly to put BC in front 1-0.
Champ Stuart and Matt Proffitt knocked back-to-back singles with one out in the 3rd to put runners on 1st and 2nd. Stuart scored from second on a Chad Funkhouser RBI single before Spencer singled to left to plate Proffitt and give BC a 3-0 lead.
Lenoir-Rhyne’s Colton Hansley and David Martin delivered RBI singles in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively, to make it a one-run game after five innings.
Spencer gave BC a 5-2 lead in the top of the 8th with a two-RBI single up the middle that scored Stuart and Cody Queen.
Hixson (S, 1) worked his way out of a bases loaded jam with one out in the 9th inning to earn his first save of the season.
The Tornados are scheduled to finish their three-game series with the Bears with a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon in Hickory. Both games will be seven innings.
