Brevard Soccer midfielder Jussi Halonen has been named Tornado Athlete of the Week for the ninth week of the 2008-09 athletic season. Halonen garnered 43 of the 102 votes cast by visitors of BCTornados.com, or 42.2%.
The junior from Joensuu, Finland scored the biggest goal of the 2008 Tornado season Friday against Lincoln Memorial. After teammate Douglas Neill's 90th minute goal sent the game to overtime, Halonen scored off of a deflection nine minutes into the extra period to give Brevard a 2-1 win over the Railsplitters. The win is the first South Atlantic Conference victory in program history. The goal is the fourth of the season for Halonen, all of them in the last nine matches.
The victory gives Brevard an opportunity to advance to the SAC Tournament. With a win Saturday against Catawba (4 p.m.; Salisbury, N.C.), the Tornados will clinch the No. 8 seed in the upcoming tournament.
The Tornado Athlete of the Week is determined by a fan poll on the frontpage of BCTornados.com. Candidates for the Tornado Athlete of the Week award are announced and voting opens every Saturday night at 10 p.m. Voting closes on Tuesday morning at 10 a.m.
