Tigerville, S.C.- The Brevard College Tornados baseball team split their doubleheader with the North Greenville Crusaders on Wednesday afternoon at Ashmore Field, earning a 6-2 win the opener before falling 11-5 in the second game.
Game One: Brevard 6, North Greenville 2
Brevard starter Zach Joyce (W, 1-2) picked up his first win of the season, limiting North Greenville to two runs (one earned) over six innings. The sophomore pitched around four hits and five walks while fanning seven Crusaders.
Aaron Goforth singled to start the 3rd before stealing second and moving to third on a Matt Proffitt groundout. Kody Spencer plated Goforth on a sac fly to centerfield to give BC a 1-0 edge.
The Tornados posted four runs in the top of the 5th thanks to a Bennett Hixson RBI single, a Chad Fisher bases-loaded walk and a two-run single from Alex Bedenbaugh to take a commanding 5-0 lead.
Chad Fishers singled in another run in the 7th to make it 6-1. James Phillips was called into relief in the bottom of the 7th with two men on and nobody out, but induced a double play groundball and a strikeout to end the game.
Game Two: North Greenville 11, Brevard 5
Proffitt’s RBI single in the top of the 1st put BC up 1-0, but North Greenville produced a four-run inning in the bottom of the second against BC starter Zach Huneycutt.
The Tornados engineered a four-run inning of their own in the top of the 4th on a Goforth RBI single, a wild pitch that scored Alex Bedenbaugh, and a two-run single by Spencer.
The Tornados lead was short-lived though as BC relievers Ryan Mercer and Tyler Lequire (L, 0-2) combined to give up seven runs over the next two innings, although three of Lequire’s runs were unearned.
