Brevard, N.C.- Brevard College starter Kevin Hamilton tossed a complete-game shutout to lead the Tornados baseball team to a 2-0 win over Mars Hill in the South Atlantic Conference series opener at Gil Coan Field on Friday afternoon.
Hamilton (W, 4-0) struck out a career-high 12 batters while pitching around seven hits over nine innings. The righty didn’t issue a walk, and wiggled out of a bases-loaded jam with two outs in the 5th to preserve the shutout.
The Tornados gained a 1-0 lead in the 3rd when Chad Fisher scored on a throwing error after reaching on a fielder’s choice.
Champ Stuart walked with one out in the bottom of the 8th, stole second and third before scoring on a Kody Spencer sacrifice fly to put BC up 2-0 going into the 9th.
Hamilton retired the Lions in order in the 9th to seal the victory.
The Tornados and Lions will resume their series with a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon, playing two seven-inning games beginning at 1 p.m.
