Black Mountain, N.C.- The Brevard College Tornados split a doubleheader with the Montreat College Cavaliers on Monday afternoon, dropping the opener 6-1 before rallying for the split with a 6-4 win game two.
Game One – Montreat 6, Brevard 1
The Tornados took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning on a Kody Spencer RBI single, but the Cavaliers scored in three straight innings to rally for a 6-1 victory.
Montreat scored a pair of runs in the 4th against BC starter JD Chaplain (L, 0-1), before posting four runs (two earned) against reliever Alex Litaker over the next 1.2 innings.
The Tornados had five hits in five innings against Montreat starter Joey Duncan, but also stranded five runners against the righty.
Game Two – Brevard 6, Montreat 4
BC rallied from a 3-2 deficit to earn the 6-4 thanks to a three-RBI performance from Hunter Donaldson and a steady bullpen.
Donaldson connected on two-run single in the top of the 1st to put BC ahead 2-0 and drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly to put the Tornados up 5-4 in the 5th.
The BC bullpen allowed only one run in 5.2 innings in relief of starter Thomas Brown. Ryan Mercer (W, 1-2) came in for the 4th and 5th, while James Phillips threw two scoreless frames to earn the save (S, 2).
The Tornados are back in action on Friday as they begin a South Atlantic Conference series with Catawba College in Salisbury.
