Charlotte, N.C.-The Brevard College Tornados softball team dropped a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader to the Anderson Trojans at Smethers Field on Wednesday afternoon, falling 13-3 and 9-1.
Game One – Anderson 13, Brevard 3
The Tornados struggled against the high-octane Anderson offense as the Trojans scored in every inning of the run-rule shortened game. The Trojans finished with 12 hits and worked six walks.
The Tornados scored three in the top of the 2nd after Anderson scored four in the bottom of the 1st against Jamie Hrobak, making it a 4-3 game going into the bottom of the 2nd.
Corinne Stiles gapped a double to right center to score Brittany Jones and Michelle Ray, who hit back-to-back singles with one out. Alyssa Miller plated Stiles with a double of her own with two outs.
The Trojans, however, got a run back in the 2nd before engineering a seven-run 3rd inning to take a 12-3 lead. AU added the 13th run in the bottom of the 4th.
Game Two – Anderson 9, Brevard 1
Anderson scored seven runs over the first two innings of game two, highlighted by an Abby Child grand slam in the bottom of the 2nd.
Alyssa Miller was saddled with the loss, pitching four-plus innings for the Tornados, allowing nine runs (eight earned) on six hits and seven walks. Miller faced two batters in the 5th before a Jessica Neidigh run-scoring double enacted the run rule.
The Tornados spoiled the shutout in the 3rd inning when Kacey Brooker reached on a fielder’s choice, and later scored on Trojan fielding error. Miller had BC’s only hit, a single to start the game.
BC returns home to host the Young Harris College Mountain Lions for a doubleheader Thursday at 3 and 5 p.m.
