Brevard, N.C. - Three fall sports teams wrap up their 2008 South Atlantic Conference regular season schedules this weekend, and all have an opportunity to earn births in the upcoming SAC Tournaments. In their inaugural season of SAC competition, the Brevard men's soccer, women's soccer and volleyball teams all have an opportunity to qualify for postseason action.
Juan Mascaro's men's soccer squad is peaking at the right time, having won their last two matches. BC toppled SAC powerhouse Lincoln Memorial on Friday, 2-1 in overtime, with Jussi Halonen scoring the golden goal. Tuesday the Tornados drilled North Greenville, 2-0, with Halonen again scoring the game-winner. Saturday Mascaro's team travels to Salisbury, N.C. for a 4 p.m. showdown with Catawba College. The Tornados and Indians both sit at 1-6 in SAC play. The winner of the match will advance to the SAC Quarterfinals as the #8 seed, while the loser's season would be over.
The women's soccer team, led by Liz Stojetz, is winless in SAC play, at 0-6, but still has an opportunity to reach the SAC Tournament. The Tornados travel to Jefferson City, Tenn. to battle Carson-Newman on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. and host Catawba Saturday at 4 p.m. A win in both matches, plus a Mars Hill loss to Lincoln Memorial on Wednesday, clinches the #8 seed for Brevard.
Brenda Skefington's volleyball team is currently 2-11 in the SAC and sits in prime position to advance to the SAC Tournament. The Tornados play two road matches this weekend: Friday against Lenoir-Rhyne at 6:30 p.m. and Saturday against Catawba at 5 p.m. There are several scenarios by which BC can clinch the #8 seed:
1) BC wins both weekend matches
2) BC wins one of two matches, and Mars Hill loses at least one of their final three SAC matches, against Lincoln Memorial (Saturday), Lenoir-Rhyne (11/7) or Catawba (11/8)
3) Mars Hill loses at least two of their final three SAC matches
BC can also earn the #7 seed in the tournament if they win both matches and Lenoir-Rhyne loses their final four SAC matches.
Be sure to support all of the fall sports teams this weekend, at home and on the road!
