Brevard, N.C.- The Brevard College Tornados lost a 24-13 slugfest to the No. 1 Lander University Bearcats at Gil Coan Field on Tuesday afternoon.
The Bearcats scored in the final seven innings of the game while pounding out 18 hits to rally from a 9-2 deficit in nonconference action with BC.
The Tornados jumped out to a 4-0 lead thanks to Cody Queen’s two-run homer in the 1st and a John Slade two-run shot in the 2nd.
Lander’s Patrick Grady got the Bearcats on the board with a solo homer in the top of the 3rd and Jacob Tisdale drove in another run with a sac fly in the top of the 4th before the Tornados answered with five runs in the 4th to take a 9-2 lead.
The Bearcats, however, posted eight runs in the 5th to take a 10-9 lead against the combination of BC starter JD Chaplain, and relievers James Phillips and Chad Fisher.
The Tornados regained a 12-10 lead with three runs in their half of the 5th. BC scored on RBI singles from Queen and Matt Proffitt, and an RBI groundout from Kody Spencer.
The Tornados pen again struggled to hold the lead as Lander tied the game at 12-12 in the 6th, scoring on a wild pitch and an RBI single up the lead.
Champ Stuart singled in Chris Christopoulos to give BC their final lead in the bottom of the 6th, a 13-12 advantage.
The Bearcats scored 12 runs over the final three innings to take a commanding 24-13 lead going into the bottom of the 9th.
The Tornados continue nonconference action on Wednesday as they host Young Harris for a 3 p.m. game at Gil Coan Field.
