Brevard, N.C.-The Young Harris College Mountain Lions scored four runs over the final two innings to take an 8-6 victory over Brevard College at Gil Coan Field on Wednesday afternoon.
The Mountain Lions took a 7-6 lead with three runs in the 8th inning against BC reliever Nick Blackwood (L, 1-4) and added an insurance run against Brevard’s Ryan Mercer in the 9th.
Oliver Pratt (W, 1-0) was the pitcher of record when the Mountain Lions took the lead in the 8th after throwing two scoreless innings in relief of starter Travis Donahoo.
The Tornados took a 4-0 lead in the 2nd when Matt Proffitt scored on a Young Harris fielding error to put BC on the board. Aaron Goforth then singled in a run and John Slade delivered a two-run single through the right side.
Slade hit his third homer of the season in the 5th, a solo shot that put BC up 5-0 before YHC posted four runs in the top of the 5th. BC made it 6-4 on a Proffitt sac fly in the 6th before the Mountain Lions rallied in the late innings.
Jay Schulte started the 9th with a single to bring the tying run to the plate for the Tornados before YHC reliever Brice Merritt (S, 1) got three straight outs to end the game.
The Tornados head to Wingate this weekend to resume South Atlantic Conference play with the Bulldogs beginning on Friday evening at 6 p.m. BC wraps the three-game series with a DH on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
