Brevard, N.C.-The Erskine College Flying Fleet scored three runs in the top of the 12th inning to steal a 6-3 victory from the Brevard College Tornados at Gil Coan Field on Tuesday afternoon.
Erskine’s Connor Gibson reached on an infield single against Ryan Mercer (L, 1-3) in the top of the 12th. Phillip Herring then reached on a two-base fielding error that moved Gibson to third.
The Tornados issued an intentional walk to Chase Corn before Will Huff cleared the bases with a triple to right center to give Erskine a 6-3 lead.
Erskine reliever Dustin Sherbert (W, 3-3) pitched around a Chris Christopoulos infield single in the bottom of the 12th after recording the final out in the 11th.
The Tornados had loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the 11th, but Flying Fleet leftfielder Nate Williamson snared Alex Bedenbaugh’s line drive on the run to end the inning.
Erskine tied the game at 3-3 on a Drew Willingham single up the middle in the top of the 8th agains BC lefty James Phillips.
BC took a 2-0 lead in the 3rd on an RBI single by Eric Renegar that plated Christopoulos and allowed Champ Stuart to score from first after the Erskine outfielder bobbled the ball.
Erskine scored twice in the top of the 6th but the Tornados took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the inning when John Slade successfully executed a squeeze play to score Bennett Hixson. Renegar and Chrisopoulos both finished 3-for-5 for the Tornados.
J.D. Chaplain made the start for BC, limiting the Flying Fleet to two runs (one earned) over seven innings. The righty fanned three and didn’t issue a walk while allowing five hits.
The Tornados are back in action Wednesday as they host the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears for a nonconference game at Gil Coan Field at 3 p.m.
