Winston-Salem, N.C.- The Brevard College Tornados softball team swept a doubleheader from the Winston-Salem State Rams at South Park Field on Wednesday afternoon, taking the opener 7-4 before winning game two 8-3.
Game 1: Brevard 7, WSSU 4
The Tornados rallied from a 2-1 deficit with six runs over the final three innings to get the win in the opener.
The Tornados used a three-run 5th to erase the 2-1 Winston-Salem lead, tying the game at 2-2 on a Brittany Tucker RBI single to left. BC then took the lead on a dropped pop fly that allowed Alyssa Miller and Brittany Fowler to score to give BC a 4-2 lead.
The Tornados scored a pair of unearned run in the 6th before capping their scoring in the 7th on a Brittany Jones RBI double to put BC in front 7-4.
BC starter Jamie Hrobak (W, 7-11) allowed four runs (two earned) in the complete-game effort, yielding eight hits and three walks while striking out two. Winston-Salem scored unearned runs on an error in the 1st and following a passed ball in the 6th.
Game 2: Brevard 8, WSSU 3
BC scored in three straight innings to earn the sweep, led offensively by Clemens and Emily Boykin’s three hits apiece.
The Rams took a 1-0 lead in the 1st before BC responded with a three-spot in the top of the 2nd. Heather Morris singled in a run to tie it and Corinne Stiles plated two more with a single up the middle to give BC a two-run lead.
Winston-Salem made it a one-run game in the bottom of the 2nd, but the Tornados again answered with three runs in the top of the 3rd to take a 6-2 lead.
Fowler and Clemens scored on a fielding error by Winston-Salem’s third baseman before Brittany Jones scored on throwing error by the Rams catcher.
BC capped their scoring with two runs in the top of the 4th when Miller scored on a throwing error and Emily Boykin knocked in a run with a single to center.
Miller allowed just one earned run in a complete-game effort in the circle for Brevard, limiting the Rams to six hits and three walks. Winston-Salem scored two unearned runs on BC errors in the 1st and 2nd inning.
The Tornados wrap their 2013 season on Saturday as they visit the Carson-Newman Eagles for a doubleheader at the Lady Eagle Softball Complex beginning at 1 p.m.
