FONGER PACES TORNADOS PAST KING, 3-1

BC matches win total from last season

BREVARD, N.C. – Brevard College sophomore transfer Sarah Fonger landed with a splash as she netted a goal while the Tornados defeated King, 3-1, in women’s soccer action at Brevard Soccer Field on Thursday afternoon.

With the win, BC (1-0-0) won its first season-opener since 2010. King (0-1-0) dropped its third season-opener in its last four seasons.

In the 22nd minute, Fonger received a nice feed from Elena Crowe in front of the net and took two steps before scoring to give the Tornados an early 1-0 advantage. “It was a great pass from Elena,” said Fonger, “It was right through the defenders and everything came together.”

In the second half, BC came out aggressive and extended its lead to 3-0 after scoring two goals in the span of 3:13 minutes. Kasi Benskin was the source of the second goal when she gathered a deflected shot after King’s Nicole Dagher stopped a Fonger shot.

Leading 2-0, Katherine Nickels outran two defenders after she received a cross from Yuki Soga and fired in the Tornados third goal in the 58th minute.

Senior goalkeeper Brittany Webster fell 75 seconds shy of a shutout after Shalisa Barnett scored King’s lone goal following a Brevard foul right outside the box. However, Webster stonewalled a penalty kick from Devon Shanklin in the 64th minute to earn one of her two saves.

The Tornados matched its win total from last season with the victory. “This season is something we’ve always believed in,” said head coach Shigeyoshi Shinohara, “I’ve been here four years and this is a goal that I have and we have built.”

King goalkeeper Dagher finished the afternoon with seven saves, while six of them came in the first half. Brevard outshot King 15-9 while six players took at least two shots.

Brevard squares off against Erskine at 2 p.m. Saturday at Brevard Soccer Field.
