BREVARD COLLEGE MEN'S SOCCER HITS ROAD TO BATTLE BELMONT ABBEY

BC looks to win consecutive games for the first time since 2011

The Brevard College men’s soccer team heads to Belmont, N.C. to face Belmont Abbey in its first road game of the season Wednesday at 4 p.m.

• BC won a double overtime thriller Saturday after freshman Rhem Stubbs headed in the game-winner in the 116th minute to snap a three-match losing skid against Erskine, 2-1. The Tornados won its season-opener for the first time since at least 2008.

• Stubbs was tabbed South Atlantic Conference Men’s Soccer Player of the Week following his two-goal performance against the Flying Fleet. Stubbs put the Tornados up 1-0 in the 40th minute before nailing the game-winner.

• Freshman goalkeeper Heath Turner turned in an impressive collegiate debut following an 11-save performance, including three in a span of 13 seconds in the 64th minute.

• BC head coach and athletic director Juan Mascaro enters his seventh season at the helm for the Tornados. Mascaro’s squad returns 16 players, including last season’s leading scorer Marcelo Betcer.

• The Tornados look to end a five-match losing skid to the Crusaders. BC has scored only three goals during the skid, including three shutouts. Last season, BC jumped out to a 1-0 advantage in the first half, but fell 3-1 following three unanswered goals.

• Belmont Abbey is 1-1-0 on the season. The Crusaders defeated Newberry, 2-1, Saturday, but lost 2-1 to Carson-Newman last Thursday.

Offensively, along with Betcer, Jami Uuttu looks to pace the squad after tying for the team lead in assists with two. Uuttu is one of three seniors on the BC roster along with Pauli Jussila and midfielder Adam Martin. Martin was one of six players to see action in all 16 matches during the ’12 season while attempting seven shots.

• Brevard was tabbed to finish 12th in the 2013 preseason coaches’ poll in the South Atlantic Conference while nationally-ranked No. 12 Wingate earned the top spot.
