Bagwell, McPhillips paced offense

NEWBERRY S.C.- Brevard College freshman Ryan McPhillips scored his team-high third goal of the season, but it wasn’t enough as Newberry defeated BC, 4-2, in South Atlantic Conference play Wednesday afternoon at Smith Park Complex in rainy Newberry, S.C.

The Wolves (1-6, 1-2 SAC) picked up their first win of the season and snapped a three-match losing skid against Brevard while the Tornados (2-5, 0-2 SAC) scored two goals for in consecutive matches for the first time this season while McPhillips has netted a goal in back-to-back matches.

BC missed a golden opportunity to strike first in the 2nd minute when Drew Gallowitch had a shot hit both posts and rattle away. The Wolves responded quickly when Anthony Lucido scored on a kick from the right side after receiving a thru ball from Brady Francis.

In the 45th minute, Newberry’s Graham Jermstad padded the lead when he headed a ball past BC goalkeeper Heath Turner after a pass from Lucido.

However, the Tornados responded with a goal of their own when McPhillips was fouled inside the box and blasted home a penalty kick to make it a 2-1 match.

Newberry sealed the victory when it scored two goals in a span of 6:26 in the second half. Tomas Garcia and Jalin Butler found the back of the net in the 60th and 66th minute, respectively, to extend the lead to 4-1.

BC sophomore Micah Bagwell netted his first collegiate goal in the 73rd minute when he beat the Wolves keeper from 10 yards out while Paulo Silva earned the assist.

Newberry outshot BC 15-9, including by a 12-4 mark in the second half. Turner finished the day with four saves while Newberry’s Patrick Sweatt earned three.

The Tornados wrap up a two-match road stint when they travel to conference foe Carson-Newman Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in Jefferson City, Tenn.
