HARTSVILLE, S.C.-  Brevard College freshman Savannah Cox delivered a game-high 14 kills to lead the Tornados past the Coker Cobras 3-1 on Saturday afternoon in Timblerlake-Lawton Gym.

The Tornados won their first South Atlantic Conference match of the season by scores of 25-22, 20-25, 25-22, and 25-10.

Cox’s 14 kills serve as a career-high for the freshman, who turned in a scorching .565 hitting percentage on the afternoon. Fatima Gharachorloo and Erin Rollins both had nine kills to help bolster the Tornados front line.

Brevard took a 7-3 lead in the opening set and were able to keep at least a two-point lead on the Cobras for the rest of the set to take a 1-0 advantage.

The Cobras tied it at 1-1 with a win in the second set and got out to a 4-1 lead in the third set before BC used a 6-1 run to go in front 7-5.

The two teams then went back and forth for rest of the set until a Coker ball handling error broke a 20-20 tie, and the Tornados ended the set on a 5-2 run for the win.

The fourth set was never in doubt as the Tornados jumped out to a 16-4 lead to get things started.

The Tornados improve to 4-8 (1-7 SAC) with the win while the Cobras drop to 3-14 (0-9 SAC) on the year.

Brevard begins a three-game home stand on Tuesday as they welcome the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears at 7 p.m.
