BREVARD, N.C.- Brevard College freshman Caleb Hall drilled home the game-winning goal in double overtime while BC picked up its first conference win, 2-1, against Tusculum Wednesday evening at Brevard Soccer Field in Brevard, N.C.
The Tornados (3-7, 1-4 SAC) defeated Tusculum in overtime for the second consecutive season while Ryan McPhillips continued his torrid run with another goal. With the win, BC has won more games this season (three) than last (two).
The Pioneers dropped to 3-6, 1-4 SAC and all six losses have been by one goal, including four in overtime.
“It’s exciting, but it comes down to hard work, hard work and hard work,” said head coach and BC Athletic Director Juan Mascaro. “We stayed on track; we stayed with the game plan.”
BC freshman McPhillips bounced back after missing a penalty kick and netted his team-high fifth goal when he received a feed from Marcelo Betcer and blasted it past Tusculum’s Ashley Elsey in the 76th minute to give BC a 1-0 lead.
“Coaches come in and give us a system and its’ worked out quite well for us,” said McPhillips. “The win is a great starting point for us. The season isn’t over yet.”
However, the lead was short lived as the Pioneers responded when Roberto Pimental crushed a ball from 35 yards out and bested BC’s Heath Turner to knot it up at 1 in the 85th minute.
The match proved to be chippie while Brevard accumulated two yellows, but Tusculum racked up three yellows and two red cards.
In the second overtime, the Tornados took advantage of the two-man favor when they fired eight shots on goal in the period. Hall was placed perfectly after an Alec Goettl shot was deflected to his feet. Hall fired in the game-winner with 1:01 remaining in the match to snap BC’s six-match losing skid and to give the Tornados its second double overtime victory of the season.
BC outshot Tusculum, 17-15, and matched its season-high in shots despite being outshot 9-4 in the second half. Turner turned in three saves while Elsey impressed with seven. McPhillips and Rhem Stubbs both accumulated three shots while four other Tornados racked up two shots.
The Tornados seek consecutive wins when they travel to Wingate, N.C. for a SAC match against Wingate Friday evening at 7 p.m.
