TORNADOS BREEZE PAST MARS HILL

BREVARD, N.C.-The Brevard College Tornados picked up their first South Atlantic Conference win of the season with a 35-7 rout of Mars Hill at Brevard Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Brevard won the time of possession battle 42:41 to the Lions’ 17:19 on their way to collecting 345 yards of total offense on the afternoon. The BC defense held the Lions to 261 yards of total offense while forcing four turnovers.

The Tornados used 14 plays to march 74 yards for a touchdown on the game’s opening drive, scoring on a one-yard touchdown run by Tanner Wright. The drive took 8:23 off the clock and gave BC a 7-0 lead following Ben Noboa’s extra point.

Wright rushed for 54 yards on nine attempts before leaving the game with an injury early in the 2nd quarter.

The Tornados forced a punt on Mars Hill’s first drive before the Lions regained possession at their own 36-yard line following a three-and-out for Brevard.

The Lions were pushing to tie the game at 7-7, driving deep into BC territory until linebacker Anthony Shakir forced a fumble that Brevard’s Michael Gruber recovered to prevent the Lions from scoring.

The rest of the 2nd quarter went by scoreless, and the Tornados carried their 7-0 advantage into halftime.

The Lions received to start the 3rd quarter, and moved the ball into Tornado territory after just two plays. A few plays later on second-and-six from the 33, BC cornerback Jacob McCleery intercepted a Trent Miller pass and returned it 74 yards to give BC a two-touchdown lead.

The play padded BC’s lead, and smothered any offensive momentum the Lions had gained on the short drive.

BC forced a three-and-out on Mars Hill’s ensuing possession, and Brevard drove 53 yards for a touchdown on their next drive to go ahead by 21. Freshman quarterback Caleb Stephens, who replaced the injured Wright, capped the drive with a seven-yard touchdown run.

Stephens rushed for 67 yards on 15 carries, and also completed three passes for 40 yards.

The BC defense then forced another three-and-out, which gave the Tornados the ball at their own 26 with just over a minute left in the 3rd quarter.

Brevard drove 74 yards with eight plays to make it 28-0 on a Jordan Ollis eight-yard touchdown rush with 12:30 left in the 4th quarter. Ollis led the BC rushing attack, which collected 290 yards, with 83 yards on 24 carries.

Another forced turnover led to BC’s final score, a one-yard touchdown rush by Jack Woerner, when Devon Holmes returned an interception 26 yards to the Lions one-yard line.

The Lions made their only trip to the end zone on their ensuing possession, completing a 24-yard touchdown pass from Zach Lappin to Dimitri Holmes to make it 35-7.

The Tornados improve to 2-4 (1-2 SAC) in 2013, while the Lions fall 1-5 (0-3 SAC) this season.

The Tornados continue conference play as they visit the Wingate Bulldogs on Saturday for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff from Irwin Belk Stadium.
