CATAWBA SPOILS SENIOR DAY, 1-0

Six seniors were recognized prior to the match

BREVARD, N.C.- Despite a seven-save effort from senior Brittany Webster, the Brevard College women’s soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision on Senior Day to Catawba in South Atlantic Conference action Saturday afternoon at Brevard Soccer Field in Brevard, N.C.

The Indians (8-5-1, 4-3-1 SAC) extended their recent success against the Tornados by winning their sixth consecutive decision. The Tornados (3-9-1, 0-6-1 SAC) saw their winless streak reach 10 despite allowing one goal for the first time since Sept. 25.

“I think our defensive line did a great job today as did Webster. I think Catawba’s defense was very solid as well,” said head coach Shigeyoshi Shinohara.

Catawba’s Kali Chaplin netted the games’ lone goal in the 40th minute when she corralled a loose ball in front of the net and beat Webster on her left side.

The Tornados Lindsay Pritchard had a golden opportunity when she nearly buried a shot off her shoulder, but the Indians Bethany Davis stonewalled the shot.

Catawba outshot BC, 16-7, including by a 10-2 margin in the first half. The Indians accumulated 14 corner kicks compared to BC’s two. Webster finished the day with seven saves while seven different Tornados registered a shot.

Davis racked up three saves to go with her clean slate while Chaplin paced the Indians with four shots while three others took two.

Prior to the game, the Tornados recognized seniors Jamie Bundy, Francie Blair, Kasi Benskin, Elena Crowe, Pritchard and Webster for their accomplishments while at Brevard. All six started the match.

“I was probably more emotional than they were,” said Shinohara. “All the seniors were very focused and channeled their emotions in the right direction.”

BC returns to the pitch Tuesday when they welcome Anderson for a SAC match at 1:30 p.m. at Brevard Soccer Field.
