TORNADOS TOP CATAWBA IN FIVE SETS

SALISBURY, N.C. – The Brevard College volleyball team held on for a 3-2 win over Catawba after taking the first two sets in Goodman Gym on Saturday evening in South Atlantic Conference action. The Tornados won by the scores of 25-23, 25-22, 17-25, 14-25 and 15-10.

Brevard improves to 5-12 overall and 2-11 in conference play while the Indians fall to 3-12 and 3-10.

The Tornados rallied from a 7-4 deficit to take the deciding fifth set. The Tornados used an 8-1 run to take the advantage 12-8. Camille Cameron and Joy Oswalt added kills from there, and Kayla Hanus sealed the victory with a service ace.

Oswalt led the Brevard attack for the third straight match, chipping in 13 kills after pacing BC with a career-high 14 kills last night.  Fatima Gharachorloo and Erin Rollins also contributed a dozen kills each.

The Tornados offense was quarterbacked by Hanus, who distributed 47 assists to go with two service aces. The senior also collected 17 digs, but it was Aleksandra Vrvilo who recorded a season-high 22 digs to lead the Tornados defensively.

Brevard took a 2-0 lead, pulling away late in the opening set and rallying from an 18-15 deficit in the second set.

A three-point run by the Tornados broke an 18-18 tie and effectively put the first set out of reach for the Indians.

Down by three at 18-15 late in the second set, Gharachorloo had three kills and a service ace during a 6-1 run that gave BC the edge.

Catawba responded in the next two sets to even the match before the Tornados triumphed in the deciding set to clinch their second conference victory of the season.

The Tornados return to action on Tuesday as they visit UVa-Wise on Tuesday night for a nonconference match from the Prior Center at 7 p.m. BC handled the Cavaliers 3-1 at home in the season opener on September 5th.
