BREVARD, N.C. – Brevard College senior cyclist Erica Zaveta and freshman Zach Valdez have been named the Sports Spot Student-Athletes of the Month for October. The award is presented by Sports Spot, in conjunction with the Brevard College Athletic Department.
Zaveta was voted the Female Student-Athlete of the Month by the BC Head Coaching staff over Erin Rollins of volleyball and September’s Student-Athlete of the Month, Yuki Soga of women’s soccer.
The senior helped BC to a Mountain Bike National Championship in Beech Mountain, N.C. Oct 25-27 when she claimed an individual Omnium Championship. Zaveta won the Short Track and Downhill races while finishing third in the Cross Country Race. The Erwinna, Penn., native won the Cross Country and Short Track Races while placing second in the Dual Slalom and third in the Downhill at the Southeastern Conference Championships in Brevard Oct. 19-20.
Zaveta claimed victory at the Short Track and Cross Country races and earned a second place finish in the Super D in a meet hosted by Mars Hill Oct. 5-6 while helping BC take first in the Team Relay.
Valdez is the second freshman to claim the Men’s Student-Athlete of the Month award by besting Josh Mower of cross country and Jacob McCleery of football. Men’s soccer freshman Ryan McPhillips earned the merit for September.
Valdez earned eight top-five finishes while participating in three competitions in the month of October. He won an Individual National Championship in Short Track and Cross Country at the National Championships. The Hemet, Calif., native finished second in both Cross Country and Short Track in the Southeastern Conference Championships. The freshman finished second in Short Track and Cross Country while helping BC win the Team Relay at Mars Hill.
These two athletes will be presented with action shots recognizing their award, which will be displayed in the lobby of Boshamer Gymnasium for the entire school year. A total of eight female and male Sports Spot Athletes of the Month will be selected in the 2013-2014 academic year. The award is selected from qualified candidates each month by the athletic department staff.
