BC went to the charity stripe 27 times

BREVARD, N.C.- A trio of Brevard College women’s basketball players registered double figures, but the Tornados fell victim to two late three-pointers while Newberry escaped BC, 62-58, in a South Atlantic Conference bout in Boshamer Gymnasium Saturday afternoon in Brevard, N.C.

The Wolves (3-1, 1-1 SAC), who were tabbed No. 1 in the SAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll, claimed a victory against BC for the 13th consecutive time while dominating the defensive boards, 31-17. The Tornados (0-3, 0-2 SAC) fall to 0-3 for the second consecutive season despite holding a +16 advantage on the free-throw line.

“I think our girls played very hard tonight. We came together and played as a team,” said head coach Shannon Reid. “We got good shots all night long and executed our offense. We get a couple shots our way and a bounce, and I think the game ends up different.”

Both offenses came out sluggish as the teams combined for 10 points in the first 5:52 of the first half. BC freshman Madison Lenox jump-started the Tornado offense when she reeled off five straight points to give the home squad an early 13-7 lead.

Newberry’s Tasia Holdorf responded with a four-point spurt of her own to tie the game for the third time, 15 apiece.

Both teams exchanged baskets until a free-throw and a three-pointer from Katie Williams pushed the Tornado lead back to four, 27-23. However, consecutive buckets from Samantha Creed in the final 70 seconds sent the game into the break knotted at 27.

The Tornados shot only 25% (6-for-24) in the first half, but was able to knock down 12-of-15 free-throws while connecting on three three-pointers.

In the second half, the game remained tight until the Wolves accumulated a 12-5 run thanks to a seven-point outburst from Creed to give Newberry a 51-41 advantage with 6:13 remaining.

BC’s Williams took the offense on her shoulders and reeled off an 8-0 run to put the Tornados within two, 51-49, with 3:41 remaining. Lenox connected on a layup and was fouled with 1:08 to go. The Raleigh, N.C., native drained the plus-one to knot it up at 54.

Newberry’s Zara Pearson silenced the home crowd when she drilled consecutive three-pointers in the final minute to give the Wolves a six-point lead.

The Tornados made things interesting and received a little help when Hadara Bannister was fouled and the Wolves received a technical foul for too many players on the floor. BC converted on all four free-throws, but was unable to force a turnover as time expired.

Williams led both teams with a career-high 19 points and seven rebounds while Lenox had a career-day with 17 points. Junior Taylor Hiatt finished the day with 11 points. BC forced 22 turnovers while only committing 12 itself.

“Madison Lenox was huge off the bench for us,” said Reid. “Katie Williams is such a high-energy player and she hit some big shots for us and made some big plays.”

Newberry’s Haylee Lepaio and Holdorf finished with 15 points each while Creed notched 13. Newberry knocked down 9-of-11 from the charity stripe while BC hit 22-of-27.

The Tornados hit the road for a SAC matchup at Tusculum with action starting at 6 p.m. in Greeneville, Tenn.
