Jefferson City, Tenn. - The Brevard College Women’s basketball team opened their season in the Eagle Club Classic taking on the Lady Bobcats of Lees-McRae on Saturday night. The team fought hard in their first game under head coach Shannon Reid, but ultimately fell 68-54.
The Tornados controlled the first 10 minutes of the game as they jumped out to an 11-4 lead behind freshman Holli Flippo’s two three-pointers and solid team defense. However, the Bobcats came back on an 11-0 run sparked by Kayla Newman and Brittany Roberson to take a 15-11 lead. The teams swapped shots throughout the rest of the first half as Lees-McRae built a 13 point lead. Freshman Anna Schlobohm made two layups in the closing seconds of the first half to cut the lead down to nine as the Tornados went into halftime trailing 37-28.
The first half was marred by sloppy play as the teams combined for 27 turnovers, with the Tornados recording 14 to Lees-McRae’s 13.
Sophomore Amanda Whitaker led the Tornados in the first half as she recorded a team-high eight points to go with a game-high six rebounds. The Lady Bobcats were led by Newman who had a game-high 10 points at the half.
The second half went much the same as the first as the teams struggled to handle the ball. Flippo started out the second half with a hot hand as she nailed a shot from behind the arc to bring the Tornados back within six. This was the closest the Tornados would get for the remainder of the contest as the Tornados’ youth and inexperience caught up them as the Lady Bobcats went on a 12-4 run, going back up by double digits. Brevard attempted to mount a comeback in the last five minutes as Whitaker made a fast break lay-up and freshman Lindsay Brendle put in a couple of foul shots, but it proved to be too little, too late as Lees-McRae took the game being played on the court in Holt Fieldhouse, 68-54.
For the game, Flippo led the Tornados with 15 points as she connected on five of nine from three-point range. She was joined in double-digit scoring by Whitaker with 11, and junior Samantha Winn and Brendle with 10 apiece. Whitaker completed her first double-double of the season as she recorded game-high 11 rebounds to go with a team-high four assists.
The Lady Bobcats were lead by Newman who recorded a game-high 20 points to go with her team-high nine rebounds. Cortney Furr added 13 points and Ashley Holland assisted as she dished out eight dimes in the Bobcat victory.
The Tornados are back in action Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. as they take on Lander University on the second day of the Eagle Club Classic. The Lady Bobcats also play tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m. as they take on the host Carson-Newman Eagles, who earlier defeated Lander in a high-scoring affair, 92-83.
