FURMAN OUTLASTS BC

GREENVILLE, S.C.- The Brevard College men’s basketball team rallied from an early 10-point deficit to tie the game late in the first half, but Division I Furman University proved too strong for BC in the second half in an 89-72 loss in Timmons Arena on Saturday afternoon.

The Torandos engineered a 12-2 run to tie the game at 23-23 on a Darius Moose layup with 7:07 remaining in the first half after falling behind 21-11 to start the game.  Moose scored a team-high 20 points for the Tornados, and helped BC’s effort with six rebounds and five assists.

Larry Wideman answered with a three-pointer on Furman’s next possession, and the Paladins were able to hold the lead for the rest of the contest. Furman closed the half on a 16-8 run to take a 39-31 lead going into the half.

After the Tornados cut the lead to six on a Miles Leathers layup at the 16:28 mark in the second half, the Paladins put the game out of BC’s reach with 13 unanswered points to take a 60-41 advantage.

Wideman finished with a game-high 24 points for the Paladins, and also contributed five rebounds and two assists. Stephen Croone added 22 for Furman, shooting a perfect 6-for-6 from the field and 7-for-7 from the foul line.

The Paladins finished the game shooting 57.4 percent from the field, including 14-for-23 from beyond the arc.

BC freshman Trevon Shaw dropped a career-high 17 points in the loss, going 6-for-10 from the floor and 5-for-8 from three-point range. Freshman Harrison White also set his career mark in scoring, finishing with 13 points.

The Tornados resume South Atlantic Conference action on Wednesday night as they host the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears in Boshamer Gymnasium at 8 p.m.
