Jefferson City, Tenn. - The second day of the Eagle Club Classic saw a match-up between the Brevard College Tornados women’s basketball team and the team from Lander University. The Tornados struggled against the full-court pressure applied by the Lady Bearcats and were unable to overcome a first half deficit in falling 100-71.
The Tornados fall to 0-2, 0-0 in the South Atlantic Conference in their young season, while Lander improves to 1-1.
The start of the game was marred by Brevard turnovers against a stingy full-court press by Lander as the Tornados fell behind 28-11 halfway through the first half. Brevard started to get back in the game as the Tornados got into the bonus due to the physical play of the Bearcats. Holli Flippo and Anna Schlobohm capitalized on their attempts as the Tornados hit 92% from the line in the first half. With three minutes left in the half, Samantha Winn hit a layup and two free throws to bring the game back within 20 at 44-25. However a jumper by Ciara Lyons put the Lady Bearcats up 51-30 as time ran out in the first half
For the first half, the Tornados shot just under 29% from the field, compared to the Bearcats 71% offensive attack.
Samantha Winn led the Tornados in the first half with 10 points to go along with five rebounds. Lander’s offense was led by Brittni Johnson who paced the attack with seven points and seven assists as well as helping two Bearcat players achieve double digits scoring in the first half. Shannon McKever had a game-high 13 at the half while Lyons chipped in with 11.
Coach Shannon Reid’s squad came out ready to make amends and their efforts were rewarded as they kept the game close through the second half. Winn continued to have the hot hand as she connected for 12 of her game-high 22 points in the half. However, the large first half lead by Lander proved insurmountable as the Lady Bearcats came away with the victory, 100-71.
For the game, the Tornados were led by Winn who recorded her first double-double of the season as she corralled 10 rebounds to go with her 22 points. She was joined in double figures by Amanda Whitaker who fell one rebound shy of her second straight double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds. Schlobohm also had 13 points on the night to go with four assists.
