BREVARD, N.C. – Brevard College freshman volleyball player Aleksandra Vrvilo and junior basketball player Darius Moose have been named the Sports Spot Student-Athletes of the Month for November. The award is presented by Sports Spot, in conjunction with the Brevard College Athletic Department.
Vrvilo was voted the Female Student-Athlete of the Month by the BC Head Coaching staff over teammate Kayla Hanus and Katie Williams of women’s basketball.
The freshman appeared in 24 sets over the span of seven matches while recording 6.2 digs per set. The Beaverton, Ore., native tallied 13 set assists and had at least 14 digs in every match in the month, including four matches of at least 20. Vrvilo set a school record since BC joined Division II with 39 digs against Newberry Nov. 2
Moose is the first upperclassmen to claim the Men’s Student-Athlete of the Month award by besting the football duo of Jordan Ollis and Michael Gruber.
Moose averaged 18 points in five contests while grabbing 7.2 rebounds per game. The Salisbury, N.C., native shot an impressive 55.9% from the floor while shooting a steady 71.4% from the free-throw line. The junior tallied a 24-point, 10-rebound double-double in the season opener against Lees-McRae Nov. 13. He distributed a career-high 10 assists in the win over conference foe Tusculum, and added 15 points for the double-double.
These two athletes will be presented with action shots recognizing their award, which will be displayed in the lobby of Boshamer Gymnasium for the entire school year. A total of eight female and male Sports Spot Athletes of the Month will be selected in the 2013-2014 academic year. The award is selected from qualified candidates each month by the athletic department staff.
