BREVARD, N.C.-The Brevard College men’s basketball team lost a heartbreaker to the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears 60-59 in Shuford Memorial Gymnasium on Saturday evening.
R.J. McClure hit the game-winning free throws with 15 seconds remaining to give the Bears the lead (10-8, 9-5 SAC) before a contested jumper from Miles Leathers fell short for the Tornados (3-15, 3-11 SAC) at the buzzer.
Trevon Shaw had hit a pair of free throws for Brevard that tied the game at 54-54 with 4:27 remaining in the game, which sparked five unanswered points to give BC a 59-54 lead with 3:05 left.
BC couldn’t find the bottom of the net over the final three-plus minutes as the Bears scored six unanswered points. A jumper by Jarvis Perry and a layup by Jonathan Fowler led to the McClure foul shots.
Shaw had a game-high 17 points and a team-high eight rebounds in 33 minutes before fouling out for Brevard. The freshman went 5-for-11 from the floor, including 4-of -6 from three-point range.
Darius Moose wasn’t far behind with 16 for the Tornados, and Dominique Pickett added 15. Moose had a team-high five assists.
McClure finished with a team-high 16 points for L-R, while Perry had a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Tornados continue their three-game road trip on Wednesday night as they visit the Mars Hill Lions (3-16, 1-13 SAC). Tipoff from Stanford Arena is set for 8 p.m.
