MARS HILL, N.C.- The Brevard College women’s basketball team took a 86-74 victory on the road at Stanford Arena against Mars Hill College on Wednesday thanks a record-setting performance from BC sophomore Katie Williams.
Williams set the new Brevard College single-game record for free throws made, hitting 21-of-22 attempts from the line. The Robbinsville, North Carolina native shattered Lindsay Brendle’s record of 13 free throws made in a game against Lincoln Memorial University in 2011.
Williams also helped Brevard set the new team mark for free throws made in a game as the Tornados knocked down 34 foul shots, passing the previous mark of 32 (January 16, 2010 at Wingate). The sophomore finished with a game-high 28 points.
Williams hit eight free throws over the final 35 seconds to help ice the victory for BC, and also chipped in nine rebounds and five assists.
Two other Tornados had twenty-plus points on the night as Madison Lenox finished with 21 points and a team-high nine rebounds and Shelby Wolfe added 20 points.
The Tornados (6-13, 5-10 SAC) used repeated trips to the free throw line to gain a one-point advantage at halftime. Two free throws from Madison Lenox gave Brevard their largest lead of the first half, putting BC in front of the Lions (3-12, 4-15 SAC) at the 9:40 mark.
Brevard travels again this Saturday as they head to Queens University of Charlotte for a 2 p.m. tipoff in the Levine Center
