BREVARD, N.C.- The Brevard College softball team swept a doubleheader from the Lees-McRae Bobcats in their 2014 home opener on Saturday afternoon, taking the opener 5-2 and edging LMC 3-2 to complete the sweep.
Game 1: Brevard 5, LMC 2
The Tornados jumped on Lees-McRae starter Celeste Sheppard (L, 0-4) for four runs in the bottom of the 1st on three hits and a walk. Alyssa Miller led off with a double and moved to third on a Brittany Fowler bunt single.
Dallas Heaton plated Miller with a double in the left field gap that moved Fowler to third. Starting pitcher Casey Whitaker helped her own cause with an RBI groundout. Heaton later scored on the throw when Kinsey Parrish stole second. Ally Davenport scored Parrish with a groundout.
Whitaker knocked in an insurance run in the 5th with an RBI groundout, giving BC a 5-0 advantage.
Whitaker (W, 1-0) held LMC scoreless through five, and allowed six hits in the complete game victory. Two BC fielding errors led to a pair of unearned runs to score in the top of the 6th.
Game 2: Brevard 3, LMC 2
Michelle Ray drove in the game-winning run with a bases-loaded single into centerfield with one out in the bottom of the 6th to give BC the 3-2 win and the doubleheader sweep. Lees-McRae had tied the game in the top of the 6th with two unearned runs against BC starter Jamie Hrobak (W, 3-0).
The sophomore didn’t allow an earned run in the game, holding the Bobcats to four hits and two walks while striking out eight.
Heaton tripled in Brittany Fowler in the bottom of the 1st to get BC on the board, and Fowler gave BC a 2-0 lead in the 3rd with a successful squeeze play.
The Tornados resume action on Saturday afternoon as they travel to Elizabethtown, Tennessee for a doubleheader with Milligan College. First pitch against the Buffaloes is set for 1 p.m.
