BREVARD, N.C.-The Wingate University Bulldogs took the series opener 5-1 over the Brevard College Tornados in South Atlantic Conference action at Gil Coan Field on Friday afternoon.
The Bulldogs (8-2, 4-2 SAC) scored in four straight innings to get the win while BC (4-5, 2-4 SAC) was held scoreless until the bottom of the 9th inning, when Brock Helton scored on an Eric Renegar sacrifice fly.
Brevard starter Kevin Hamilton (L, 0-1) held the Bulldogs scoreless until Shane Billings doubled with two outs in the 5th and scored on a single to center. Wingate tacked on a run in both the 6th and 7th innings against Hamilton, who allowed three earned runs over seven innings.
Wingate pushed across a pair of runs against BC reliever Tyler Konzen in the 8th on three hits before the righty was lifted in favor of lefty Kyle Pittman. Only one of the runs charged to Konzen was earned after a BC fielding error allowed Josh Clark to reach with one out.
Wingate starter Olen Little (W, 3-0) held the Tornados scoreless for seven innings before reliever Tyler Brown recorded the final six outs.
The Tornados and Bulldogs will finish the series with a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Gil Coan Field beginning at 12 p.m.
