TIGERVILLE, S.C.- The Brevard College baseball team couldn’t get their offense going in a 5-1 loss to the North Greenville Crusaders on Tuesday afternoon at Ashmore Field.
The Tornados had the tying run at the plate in the 9th after loading the bases with no outs before a strikeout and a double play ended their chance at a comeback.
The Tornados (5-7) outhit North Greenville (3-8) 7-6, but NGU starter Matt Laurens stranded six base runners to keep BC out of scoring position for much of the game.
The Crusaders tallied four runs (two earned) against BC starter Hunter Donaldson (L, 0-1), who fanned three over five innings. North Greenville posted three runs in the 1st on three hits and an error.
NGU’s Tyler Mitchell added a run with a solo homer in the 3rd to make it 4-0.
The Tornados spoiled the shutout in the top of the 6th as Ryan Ahlum singled in the leadoff spot and scored on Chip Helton’s single to cut NGU’s lead to 4-1.
The Crusaders responded in their half of the 6th on a sacrifice bunt by Mitchell Painter that made it 5-1.
The Tornados are back in South Atlantic Conference action this weekend as they visit the Mars Hill Lions for a three-game series at Henderson Field. First pitch for Friday’s opener is set for 2 p.m.
