SPARTANBURG, S.C.- The Brevard College softball team split their doubleheader on day two of the Mid-South Classic tournament on Saturday, edging Columbus State 4-2 in the game one before falling 4-3 to Lander in the nightcap.
Game 1: Brevard 4, Columbus State 2
Casey Whitaker hit a two-run homer in the top of the 7th to give the Tornados a 4-2 lead on their way to a win in the opener.
Jamie Hrobak (W, 5-3) retired the side in order in the 7th and held the Cougars to two runs in the complete-game effort, giving up only five hits and a pair of walks.
BC took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd on Michelle Ray’s RBI groundout that scored Lauren Parker, and added their second run on an Ally Davenport RBI groundout in the 6th.
Davenport’s RBI tied the game at 2-2 after Columbus State took a 2-1 lead on a double in the 3rd.
Game 2: Lander 4, Brevard 3
Lander took game two in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the 7th inning on a MacKenzie Smith single after Destiny Clyde doubled with one out.
The Tornados scored two runs in the 5th and added another in the 6th on a Kinsey Parrish RBI single to tie the game at 3-3 after Lander scored three runs in the 1st.
The Tornados will wrap the tournament tomorrow as they play Flagler at 10 a.m. and North Georgia at 2 p.m.
