GAFFNEY, S.C.-The Brevard College baseball team split a doubleheader with Limestone College on Tuesday, shutting out the Saints 1-0 in the opener before dropping a 7-3 decision in the second game.

Game 1: Brevard 1, Limestone 0
Five Brevard College hurlers combined to shutout Limestone in the opener, limiting the Saints to five hits in the seven-inning game.

BC starter James Phillips tossed three scoreless innings before giving way to JD Chaplain (W, 1-1) for the 4th. Kevin Hamilton and Zac Joyce breezed through the 5th and 6th before Dustin Haithcox (S, 1) retired the side in order in the 7th.

The Tornados scored what turned out to be the game-winning run on a squeeze play in the top of the 2nd. Brock Helton doubled to right center to start the inning, moved to third on John Slade’s bunt single and scored on a bunt single by Chad Fisher.
Game 2: Limestone 7, Brevard 3
The Tornados couldn’t hold a 3-0 lead in game two as the Saints scored seven unanswered runs over their final three at-bats to avoid the sweep.

The Saints managed to score four runs with two outs against righty Tyler Konzen (L, 1-2) in the 4th to take the lead, and added three insurance runs in the 6th against Hunter McBride.

BC started the game with three straight singles on their way to a pair of runs in the top of the 1st. Brock Helton singled though the right side to start the game and moved to second on Chip Helton’s single to center.

Brock Helton scored on Kody Spencer’s RBI single through the right side, and Chip Helton came in on a Hunter Donaldson sacrifice fly. BC made it 3-0  in the 3rd on an Alex McGee double to center that scored Brock Helton. 

The Tornados are back in action tomorrow as they play a nonconference game at Lenoir-Rhyne. First pitch from Bears Field is slated for 4 p.m.
