Five Tornados score double figures in first victory of the season

Brevard, N.C. - The Brevard College women’s basketball team overcame home opener nerves to win their first contest of the 2008-2009 season over Virginia Intermont, 79-58.

With the win, the Tornados improve to 1-3, 0-0 in the South Atlantic Conference while the Lady Cobras fall to 2-6, 2-0 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference.

Brevard fell behind early as the Lady Cobras took a 15-12 lead 10 minutes into the contest. After a three-point play by Virginia Intermont’s Haley Odle to push the lead to six, the Tornados took over the game by crashing the boards. Both Amanda Whitaker and Holli Flippo recorded five rebounds in the first half for the Tornados as Brevard came back with a 27-14 run sparked by three Amber Roberts’ three pointers to go into the halftime break with a 39-29 lead.

The Tornados shot a season-best 50 percent (16-32) from the field in the first half, as well as 41 percent (5-12) from behind the arc, while holding Virginia Intermont to 39 percent (11-28) from the field and just 22 percent (2-9) from three-point territory. The Tornados controlled the boards as they out-rebounded the Lady Cobras 19-13 in building a 10 point halftime lead.

For the half, the Tornados were led by Roberts and Samantha Winn, each with nine points. The Lady Cobras were lead by Jenecia Whitaker and Haley Odle with eight and seven points respectively.

In the second half, Anna Schlobohm came out firing for the Tornados as she scored nine of Brevard’s first 11 points in the half as BC built a 50-39 lead. Following several Tornados fast break conversions, the lead would increase to 20 with eight minutes left in the game. The Lady Cobras brought the game back within 14 on a layup by Morghan Arnold, but back-to-back layups by Brevard’s Millie Wharton and the physical play by Kelly Hudler stopped the rally short as the Tornados rode the lead to victory, 79-58.

For the game, five Tornados scored in double figures, led by Winn’s game-high 15 points. Hudler, Whitaker, and Schlobohm each recorded 12 points for the game, with Flippo rounding out the group with 10. Flippo and Whitaker led the way for Brevard in rebounding as each recorded a game-high eight boards.
