BREVARD, N.C.- Brevard College took the opener of their series with Lenoir-Rhyne 8-2 on the strength of a six-run 1st inning and a complete game from Kevin Hamilton on Friday afternoon at Gil Coan Field.
The Tornados erupted for six runs in the home half of the 1st, knocking L-R starter Eric Ryan (L, 1-3) after just a third of an inning. After getting Eric Renegar to fly out for the first out of the game, the Tornados put together five straight hits before Ryan was lifted for Landon Elks.
Chip Helton’s double to left scored Matthew Proffitt, who singled up the middle, to put the Tornados in front 1-0. Kody Spencer then singled to left to plate Helton, and later scored on a Hunter Donaldson double to left center.
Brock Helton moved to third on the Donaldson double after singling up the middle, and made it 4-0 on a Tyler Tant sacrifice fly to right. Renegar singled in Donaldson and Brayden Morris in his second at-bat of the inning to cap BC's scoring in the 1st.
Hamilton (W, 1-3) scattered eight hits and two walks while striking out eight in his second complete game of the year. The Bears scored an unearned run in the 4th following a pair of BC fielding errors, and added another in the 5th on Frank Poerio’s RBI single to make it a four-run game.
The Tornados added insurance runs in the 6th and 8th, capitalizing on a Bears miscue and Brock Helton’s RBI single, respectively.
The Tornados go for the series win tomorrow afternoon in a doubleheader at Gil Coal Field beginning at 12 p.m.
