BREVARD, N.C.- The Brevard College baseball team earned a series win over Lenoir-Rhyne with a 6-1 defeat of the Bears in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Gil Coan Field.
The Tornados clinched the series win after prevailing in the opener 8-2 on Friday night, but fell short of the sweep with a 3-2 loss in Saturday’s second game.
Game 1: Brevard 6, Lenoir-Rhyne 1
BC righty Zac Joyce (W, 2-2) limited the Bears to one run on five hits while striking out a season-high nine batters in the complete-game effort.
The Tornados took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd when Chad Fisher tapped an infield single with the bases loaded to score Hunter Donaldson, who started the inning with a single up the middle.
BC went ahead 3-0 in the 3rd on sacrifice flies from Donaldson and then Tyler Tant before the Bears scored in the top of the 4th on a Chase Hathcock sacrifice fly.
Donaldson helped BC extend their lead in the 7th with a two-run double before Fisher singled through the left side to score Donaldson and make it a 6-1 lead for BC.
Game 2: Lenoir-Rhyne 3, Brevard 2
Brandon Walker's two-run double in the 6th put L-R in front 3-2 for their first lead of the series. The Bears scored their first run in the 5th on a sac fly from Ivan Vieitez after BC took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 2nd.
Brayden Morris’ single up the middle put the Tornados on the scoreboard in the 2nd before John Slade scored on a L-R fielding error to make it 2-0.
JD Chaplain (L, 1-3) allowed three runs in 5.1 innings, giving up seven hits and two walks while striking out five. Dustin Haithcox finished the 6th following Walker’s double and Hunter McBride threw a scoreless 7th.
The Tornados are back in action on Tuesday as they host Young Harris for a nonconference matchup at Gil Coan Field at 3 p.m.
